Sanjay Gandhi National Park Sanjay Gandhi National Park, better identified as Borivali National Park offers a pleasant change from the usual sights and attractions of the big city of Mumbai. The undulating green lands of the Borivili National Park are just the kind of surroundings to which one would love to retreat for some moments of quiet introspection or meditation. The great panoramic views of hills, valleys, lakes and open expanses can actually have a therapeutic effect on mind, body and soul. This park is one of the famous Indian National Parks.

This Park was established in the year 1983 in the district of Thane and Mumbai in an area of 86.96 sq kms. Most of the forest is dry deciduous type with a few patches of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests towards the Kanheri caves, 109 Buddhist caves chiseled out of the volcanic rock dating back to the first century B.C. Also housed within the Park area are the Tulsi and Vihar Lakes. Plant species are mangrove, jambal, teak. Hikers have the opportunity to trek along the Park with its numerous tracks, the most popular being the Ashok Van Trail that winds through the thick forest to a dense cluster of Ashoka trees. The Gaumukh Trail moves to an open space of volcanic rock and the Kanheri Caves, whilst View Point is the toughest option up to the highest point in the Park at about 490 mts.

 


The fauna of the Park consists of panWildlife in Sanjay Gandhi National Parkther, jungle cat, mongoose, four-horned antelope, sambar, mouse deer, wild boar, langur, monkey and crocodile. A variety of water birds, of prey and vultures, quails, ring fishes,owls, parakeets are found. Amphibians, fishes turtles, python, snakes and a large variety of butterflies and moths also flourish in the park.

The Park also offers a Lion Safari Park surrounded by a 6.5 mts high fence, housing the mighty Lion. There is also the Crocodile Park where reptiles of different sizes can be seen. Another attraction here is a mini train that takes visitors on a 15-minute ride along the hills of the famed Gandhi memorial and passes over the Deer Park.

Leopard, Spotted deer, black naped hare, barking deer, porcupine, palm civet, mouse deer, rhesus macaque, bounet macaque, Hanuman langur, Indian flying fox, and sambhar, leopards are found here.

Among birds, the most commonly seen are jungle owlets, golden orioles, magpies, robins, hornbills, bulbuls, sunbirds, peacock, and woodpeckers. Several times, migratory and resident birds like paradise flycatcher, kingfisher, mynas, swifts, gulls, egrets, and herons are also visible.

Safari in Sanjay Gandhi National Park

 

The Lion Safari is the most famous in the Park's special buses that navigate across crisscrossed roads and offer close encounters with the majestic King of the Jungle. The timings for the Safari are 9 AM to 1 PM and 2.20 PM to 5.20 PM. The Safari remains non-operational on Mondays.

How to reach Sanjay Gandhi National Park

 
Air :

The nearest airport is Santa Cruz at a distance of 16 kms for domestic air travel. This airport is connected to almost all the major Indian cities with regular flights. The nearest international airport is Sahar at a distance of around 20 kms from the park.

Rail :

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) at a distance of 40 kms is the nearest railway hub connected to almost all the parts of India by regular trains. Borivali Station is the nearest railway station connected to Mumbai CST and Mumbai Central Railway terminuses.

Road :

The Park is connected to all parts of Mumbai and other places in Maharashtra with very good road connections. Buses ply on Sunday's and holiday's from Mumbai to the Park. Chartered vehicles are available to the park on all days from Mumbai.
