Bandipur National ParkHalfway down the Mysore-Ooty highway, the Deccan Plateau meets the wrinkled folds of the Western Ghat mountains. Here lies one of India's best-known wildlife reserves - Bandipur National Park. Endowed with a moderate climate and diverse geographical features, the park supports a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, making it a veritable paradise for wildlife.

Apart from being home to the Asiatic elephant, Bandipur also has a sizable number Elephants in Bandipur National Parkof tigers. The park is one of the 15 sanctuaries selected across India for Project Tiger, a scheme launched in 1973, by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature in conjunction with the Indian Government.The project is designed to save the tiger and its natural habitat from potential dangers. Other natural inhabitants of this lovely forest are elephants, gaur, sambhar, chital, mouse deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, jackal, sloth bear, panther, Malabar squirrel, porcupines and the black-knapped hare. Birds like jungle fowl and green pigeon are also found here.

You cannot tour the national park in your private vehicles as the sound downs out chances of watching animals in their natural habitat. Forest department jeeps and vans are available for touring the park. The elephant rides are also organised by the Forest Department for an hour (or more) or so. You can also book a 'Machan' near the watering hole to catch a close view of the animals.

Air :

The Bangalore airport is the nearest airport - 220 kms away.

Rail :

The nearest railhead is Nanjangud, 55 kms away followed by the Mysore station at a distance of 80 kms. You can easily hire a taxi or catch a bus or train from Mysore or Ooty.

Road :

The Bandipur National Park is 220 kms from Bangalore; 80 kms from Mysore and 80 kms from Ooty. The Gundulpet town is 20 kms away from Bandipur and is the nearest road head in Bandipur. The national park is well connected through road with every big or small town.
