AGRA

A crimson sun casting an orange hue, setting behind the luminescent white marble of the epitome of everlasting love 'The Taj Mahal', is probably the 'cliched' picture that leaps to our mind when we think of Agra. Why should it not? After all Taj Mahal remains unsurpassed in beauty. But there is much more to Agra than just the Taj Mahal. Agra has a rich and puristic cultural mix of the Persian and the Mughal era. It is home to many ancient relics and monuments of historical and cultural significance - Taj Mahal, the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri, the exquisite tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah are just a few of the many wonders of pristine Mughal architecture that are nestled in the city.

Historians are of the general opinion that the city of Agra was founded in 1504 A.D. by Sikandar Lodi, the ruler of the Delhi Sultunate. Sikander Lodi's son, Ibrahim Lodi, ruled over the city after his father's death until he fell fighting Babar in the first battle of Panipat fought in 1526. Under the Mughals, the city witnessed the blossoming of some of the finest pieces of architecture ever made. The magnificence of the ancient times is not the only thing that would strike you with awe. In the backdrop of the monuments and the tombs, is a bustling industrial city getting richer by the day. Some of you might get down on your knees twice - at the Taj Mahal to propose and the second time to thank your stars for all the shopping you could do in the city! Agra has a thriving market of marble artifacts, silk fabrics, and leather goods available at dirt cheap rates.

VARANASI

In Mark Twain’s words "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". Get immersed in the oldest Hindu tradition in Banaras or Kashi or Varanasi. This quaint city is wrapped in spiritualism, mysticism, Sanskrit and yoga. The city thrives on music and dance and has given birth to many maestros such as Ravi Shankar, Ustad Bismillah Khan. Varanasi is home to the shrine of Lord Kashi Vishwanath and is also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva which attracts huge number of pilgrims from all across the world. When visiting the city, don’t forget to chew the famous ‘Banarasi Pan’, known for its special flavour.

History

According to legend, the city was founded by the Hindu god Lord Shiva, around 5,000 years ago and is one of the seven sacred cities of Hindus. Many Hindu scriptures, including the Rigveda, Skanda Purana, Ramayana, and the Mahabharata, mention the city.

Varanasi is generally believed to be about 3,000 years old. Varanasi was a commercial and industrial centre famous for its muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture. During the time of Gautama Buddha (born 567 BCE), Varanasi was the capital of the kingdom of Kashi. The celebrated Chinese traveler, Xuanzang, attested that the city was a center of religious, educational, and artistic activities, and that it extended for about 5 km along the western bank of the Ganges.

Mahmud of Ghazni in 1033 CE followed by Mohammed Ghori in 1193 CE, raided Varanasi and pillaged several Hindu temples. At the be beginning of the 17th century, Mughal Emperor Akbar brought some relief in the destruction of Hindu temples, but towards the end of that century, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb led a massive temple destruction and renamed the city to Mohammadâbâd. Due to the massacre during the years of Mughal rule, learned scholars of Varanasi fled to other parts of India until Marathas came to the rescue of the city. The Marathas restored the peace, sanity and pride of the city under their patronage.

NEW DELHI

Delhi is the present day version of Indraprastha, the legendary capital of Pandavas, and has in-between been seen various rulers on its throne, the longest being Mughals. No wonder Delhi has charmed writers, Sufi saints and travellers alike. The present Delhi is one of the most developed Indian as well as global cities albeit with its glorious past lurking across the city. The head of Indian government sits in Delhi in the Parliament in central Delhi, surrounded by forts and monuments of his ancestors, both autocratic and monarchs. These are places like Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, Jantar Mantar et al. Then there are imperial architectures around Lutyen's Delhi including Connaught Place, in heart of city and the closest Delhi can get to London's Trafalgar Square.

While these old one's have been there since long, the New Delhi, including NCR or National Capital Region has shown exemplary growth in architecture, business avenues, services, tourism and township. Let us have a quick trip across the capital...

KHAJURAHO

A temple town like no other, Khajuraho is one of India's most loved tourist destinations, and is a cultural masterpiece that had survived centuries of neglect before being restored to its former glory. Known for its stunning 9th - 11th century temples, Khajuraho was the cultural capital of the Chandela Dynasty of Madhya Pradesh, and once contained 85 temples, of which only 22 remain now, divided into three major zones, and protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tale behind the construction of these erotic sculptured temples is as interesting as the temples themselves: Hemvati, the lovely daughter of a Brahmin priest was seduced by the Moon God while bathing in a pool near her house in Benares, and later gave birth to Chandravarman, the founder of the Chandela dynasty.

Chandravarman built most of these temples after a dream visitation by his mother who asked him to reveal the shallow nature of human passion to the world. Other versions lead us to believe that the Moon God told Hemvati the only way to expunge her guilt over her extramarital affair with him was to instruct her yet-to-be-born illegitimate son, the prophesized founder of the Chandela dynasty, to build 85 temples with erotic carvings, gardens, and lakes in the forest of Khajurs (date trees), which then subsequently came to be known as Khajuraho. Still a small town, Khajuraho has a population of 5000 friendly people, who are always glad to help the visitors with open arms.
