About Richmond

One of the oldest American cities, Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a state in the South Region of the United States of America. The region was first settled in 1607 by English settlers Capt. Christopher Newport and Capt. John Smith, on a site previously inhabited by Powhatan Indians. It was later named Richmond, after the London suburb of Richmond-upon-Thames, by its founder William Byrd II in 1737. Richmond is well-connected with the Richmond International Airport, and is located in the Piedmont region of Virginia, at the highest navigable point of the James River in a region characterised by low, rolling hills. A city with a rich historical past, Richmond's Shockoe Bottom area is where one of the major events catalysing the abolition of slavery took place, and during the Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederacy, and has the second-oldest US Statehouse, the Virginia Capitol Building. The Tredegar Iron Works factory was largely responsible for once making Richmond the 2nd largest producer of iron the United States. Places to visit include: Hollywood Cemetery, Belle Isle, Historic Downtown, Maymont Park, Byrd Park, American Civil War Center, White House of the Confederacy, and the Tredegar Iron Works. Rafting on James River is also popular.
