Augusta is a city in Richmond County, Georgia, and is the principal city of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area, near the United States military base, Fort Gordon. The city is well-connected to the rest of the country with the Augusta Regional Airport (AGS). Augusta is best known for hosting The Masters Golf Tournament each spring. Historically, Augusta was very important during the Civil War, due to its strategic location inland on the Savannah River, where one could comfortably cross the river. Thus the town was mostly spared the destruction during the Civil War, and still retains many old building and landmarks, in the Historic Downtown district of the city. The town was named by James Oglethorpe in honour of Augusta, the Princess of Wales, daughter-in-law of King George II of Great Britain and mother of King George III of Great Britain. The city was briefly state capital from 1785 to 1795. In recent years, Augusta has become a major part of Georgia's economy, and is a centre for medicine, biotechnology, and military. Places to see in Augusta include: Augusta Canal, Fort Discovery/National Science Center, and such beautiful parks and scenic parts as the Riverwalk Augusta, Augusta Common, Aqueduct Park, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, and Diamond Lakes Regional Park.
