About Anchorage

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, and makes up for as much as 40% of the state's population. A unique sub-arctic port city, Anchorage is one of the most cosmopolitan places in the United States. Technically a municipality, Anchorage is a consolidated city-borough that has over 360,000 residents within its Metropolitan Statistical Area. Anchorage's beginnings are unlike other large port towns in Alaska, because it was founded as neither fishing nor mining village. The site for the city just happened to be the temporary railroad construction port used to build the Alaska Railroad from 1915 to 1923, and was named Ship Creek Landing. It quickly became a tent city, and Anchorage was incorporated on November 23, 1920. The city's early economy was centred around transportation, beginning with sea and railroad and moving on to air travel with the opening of Merrill Field in 1930, and the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in 1951. In 1968, oil was discovered in Prudhoe Bay, and this understandably spurred Anchorage's growth as a city. Anchorage is located in South Central Alaska, and lies at a higher latitude than Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and St. Petersburg. Anchorage has a sub-arctic climate with cool, short summers. Average daytime summer temperatures range from approximately 13 to 26 degrees Celsius.
