gracious tall palm trees
paint. Undoubtedly, coconut is the only commercial
crop. Deep green shrubs known locally as Kanni,
Cholam, Chovak, Punna and Cheerani characteristically
border the base of coconut palms.
Of the 35 islands, only 10 stand inhabited,
namely Agatti, Amini,
Andrott, Bitra,
Chetlat, Kadmat,
Kalpeni, Kavaratti,
Kiltan and Minicoy.
The island of Kavaratti is the most developed
of the islands with the highest percentage of
non-islanders as residents. Fifty-two mosques
are spread out over the island, the most beautiful
being the Ujra mosque. A well,
within its precincts, is believed to contain
water of curative powers. The Ujra mosque has
an ornately carved ceiling, said to have been
carved from a piece of driftwood. Kavaratti
also has an aquarium with several colorful species
of fish.
Minicoy is a large island in
the Lakshadweep group of islands that lies close
to Maldives. While at Minicoy you must visit
the Tuna Canning Factory, the lighthouse, 48.13
mts high built by the British way back in 1885
and enjoy the performance of the traditional
Lava Dance.
All in all, this magical
destination
awaits anyone who needs to get away from the
madness and frenzy of mundane life. |
