Activities in Gangtok

Trekking in Sikkim - Gangtok offers interesting treks at the Pemayangtse, Khechopalri, Yuksam, Tsokha, Dzongri, Thangshing, Zemathang, Chaurigang, Tashiding, Varsey, Yangang, Rabongla, Sang and Sikip. Although only one high altitude trek is currently available, several low altitude treks, free from trekking restrictions, provide tremendous opportunities for trekkers to enjoy the terraced landscapes, waterfalls and forests.

River Rafting - River Teesta of Sikkim offers the most challenging

invitation to the rafters in the eastern Himalayan region. Teesta provides a series of white water rapids with various intensities at regular intervals. Meandering down the rough and rugged mountain river, you will savour a blend of nature and adventure.

Events in Gangtok

The Buddhist festival of Bumchu is held in the Tashiding Gompa during January. The festival of Chaam is held in Enchey Gompa during January-February and is marked by dancing. Kagyat Dance is a mask dance held every month at Gangtok, Pemayangtse and Phodong. Losar marks the Tibetan New Year and is celebrated during February-March at Pemayangtse and Rumtek. Tse Chu is a Buddhist dance held in May at Rumtek. Saga Dawa, held in Gangtok during May, and Drukpa Teshi, celebrated statewide during July, mark Buddha's first teaching. Phang Lhabsol is a mask dance celebrated statewide during August. Dasain, celebrated statewide during September-October, is marked by gift swapping and animal sacrifice.

Getting There & Away to Gangtok

	The closest airport is at Bagdogra, which is 124-km from Gangtok and connected by air with all-important Indian Metros.
	The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri, which is 125-km from Gangtok. NJP is well connected with all major cities of India.
	Gangtok is connected with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri by NH-31 A. the Sikkim nationalised transport plies regular bus services between Gangtok and Siliguri and within Sikkim. Private buses, jeeps and taxis are also available from Siliguri and Bagdogra.

Getting Around in Gangtok

Private Taxis, Jeeps and Landrovers ply regularly on the Gangtok- Siliguri Highway and are available for transfer of passengers between Gangtok and Siliguri/ New Jalpaiguri Junction/ Bagdogra, and also for local sightseeing.
