Mudumalai - The Destination

There
are few things that can equal the excitement
and novelty of seeing wild animals in their
natural habitat. One of the first wildlife sanctuaries
in the country, Mudumalai literally means ‘old
hills’. Made up of a number of old forest
shooting blocks Kargudi, Theppakkadu and Masinagudi,
today they are a safe refuge for the largest
land mammal on earth, the elephant. In addition
to them, you will find gaurs, chital, sambar,
tigers and scampering monkeys.

Park. The river Moyar that flows
along the border or Tamil Nadu and Karnataka separates
the two. You will have to be extremely careful of
the terrain varies with hills, valleys, ravines, watercourses
and swamps. The vegetation comprises of tropical moist
deciduous forests, dry deciduous forests and scrub
forests. It also has a rich bird life that includes
Malabar Trogan, Grey hornbill, crested hawk eagle
and crested serpent eagle.

Attractions in Mudumalai
The sanctuary houses a
large variety of moist deciduous vegetation
such as Bamboos, Grewia, Aredesia, Terminalia
Tomontosa and Indian Labumusum. Elephants, tigers,
the common langur, leopards, wild boar, four-horned
antelope, python, barking deer, otter, crocodiles,
spotted deer, wild dog, jackal, other smaller
mammals and reptiles play around in the wildlife
sanctuary. Birds like peacock, red spur owl,
goggle eyed plover, the shama, green pigeons,
bulbuls, mynahs, spotted babbler, eagles, hawks,
king vultures and falcons are found in abundance
here. Catch the right season and you may even
spot some migratory birds!

nearest airport is in Coimbatore, 160
km away. Regular flights operate from
Chennai, Kozhikode, Bangalore and Mumbai.

broad gauge railway head is Mettupalayam
(46 kms). Major broad gauge railway junction
is Coimbatore. It is connected with all
major cities. Mettupalayam to Ooty, is
connected by a Mountain Railway which
is 4 hours journey. |

Mudumalai
is well connected by good roads. There
is a regular bus service from Bangalore,
Mysore, Coimbatore, Calicut, Kanyakumari,
Tanjavur, Tirupati and Cochin. Kotagiri,
Coonoor and Doddabeta. Buses ply regularly
to the sanctuary. |
