Common Wealth Games 2010 - New Delhi, IndiaA multi national and multi spirited event, the Commonwealth Games is held every four years with the Commonwealth of Nations as its participating countries. The legacy of the Commonwealth Games began in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, as the British Empire Games. In 1954, it was called the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, while in 1970, it further changed its name to British Commonwealth Games. It assumed its current designate as Commonwealth Games in 1978 in Edmonton. The years 1942 and 1946 did not see the Commonwealth Games due to World War II. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has been created for the management of this sports extravaganza and is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.
Also known as the 'Friendly Games', only single competition sports were played initially in the Commonwealth Games. But the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur ushered in a change and group games usually played in the commonwealth countries like cricket, rugby, hockey and netball were included. Year 2000 saw yet another achievement, when Commonwealth Youth Games was introduced for athletes up to 18 years of age for aspiring young athletes from the Commonwealth nations to gauge what the Commonwealth Games has in store for them. The Commonwealth Games of 2002 in Manchester introduced games for elite athletes with a disability (EAD) in a fully inclusive sports programme. The current Commonwealth Games will be hosted between October 3rd and October 14th, 2010 in New Delhi, the national capital of India. The XIX Commonwealth Games will see a host of events featuring seventeen sports - Aquatics (Swimming, Synchronised Swimming and Diving), Archery, Athletics (Track and Field, Road Walk and Marathon), Badminton, Boxing, Cycling (Track, Road Mass Start and Road Time Trials), Gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic), Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby 7's, Shooting (Pistol, Small Bore, Full Bore and Clay Target), Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
