Northwest Airlines History
Northwest Airlines was established on 1st September, 1926 by Colonel Lewis Brittin as Northwest Airways. Initially, Northwest Airways started operations as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office Department. With a fleet of two leased, open - cockpit biplanes - a Thomas Morse Scout and a Curtiss Oriole, Northwest Airways established a mail route between Minneapolis to Chicago. In 1927, the airline started flying passengers within America. In the year 1928, Northwest began its first international service to Winnipeg, Canada. Further, it extended its operations to small cities in the region and added up more destinations with the passing time. In 1930s, Northwest Airways adopted the new name Northwest Airlines. On April 14, Northwest Airlines and its Sky Team alliance partner Delta Air Lines announced their merger. On October 29, 2008, the US Department of Justice approved the merger between Northwest and Delta Air Lines, and world’s largest passenger airline came into existence.
